MIRAFLORES HISTORY
Miraflores De La Riviera golf was opened in April 1990 by the Mayor of Mijas. The first design of the golf course was by Robert Trent Jones and then it was redesigned and overseen by Falco Nardi who sadly died before its completion.
Fifteen hundred shares were issued and all were sold before the grand opening. Each share costing 1,000,000 pesetas.
Eight hundred of the shares were jointly purchased by a South African Company and a local company Urbanisation Miraflores. Their name was registered UMSA.
In 1996 a new Board of Directors was elected and a proposal was put forward to become a Golf Club with a calendar drawn up of golfing events and social gatherings. The daily management of the club was run by the Junta Directiva made up of the President Stan Smith, Administrator Amir Navhandi, Shirley Wald, Peter Afzelius (Course Committee), Lorraine Shufflebotham
(Lady Captain), Pepe Gonzalez (Head Green Keeper) and Ricardo (Caddy Master). In the August of that year, Peter Afzelius was made aware that the club was up for auction at Mijas Town Hall due to unpaid debts. After an emergency Board meeting and several meetings with creditors and the Bank, the situation was resolved. Then, in 1997, many of the 150 shareholders were not paying maintenance fees. This led to a change in statutes of the Company whereby playing rights would be lost if fees were not paid. 1001 votes were needed to make this change and with much effort this was achieved.
In 1998 the opportunity arose to purchase 851 shares owned by UMSA at a cost of 450,000 pesetas per share. The Board formed a company named Golf Venture and approached members to help with the buy out. 140 members invested to help finance the Share. We ended up with 800 active shares and Golf Venture still owns shares with no playing rights. Miraflores Golf Club was on its way.
Competitions, Honours Boards, Trophies and much more
The first Moonlighters competition was played on Tuesday 3rd January 1995. This was organised by the Caddy Masters with the help of the Captains. It began life as a 9 hole Stapleford competition and was changed in later years, by Marie Dew, to a Texas Scramble played every Thursday. This has proved to be very popular and a great way to play with so many different members. in remains very much a social part of our club.
In 1995 the Lady Captain, Lorraine Shufflebotham, suggested to the Board of Directors that she should ask the Members to sponsor Honours Boards and Trophies for varied competitions, to be played for each year. This proved very successful.
In 1996 the Captains Stan Smith and Lorraine Shufflebotham donated the Captains Board, trophies and prizes. To this day, the Captains of the year continue to donate the prizes for this competition. Kevin and Margaret Morrissey donated the Honours Board and trophies for the Morrissey Trophy Competition. Brian and Heather Ord donated the Honours Board, shield and prizes for the Ord Sheild competition.
In 1997 Trevor and Shirley Lempard donated an Honours Board, trophies and prizes for the Club Championship.
In 1998 John and Jean Curtis donated the Honours Board, trophy and prizes for the Curtis Cup. Mervyn and Maureen Richardson donated the Honours Board, trophies and prizes for the Richardson Trophy. Noel and Pam Morgan donated the Honours Board, trophy and prizes for the Morgan Valentine Trophy.
In 2001 Roger Theodorsen suggested we have an International Day where teams of four from their respective counties play for a trophy. The Members taking part supplied their country's cuisine and a wonderful array of food has always been served. Many of these evenings ended with songs of each nation.
Also in 2001 Julie Oakes, the Lady Captain, arranged the first of the 'Ladies Away Trips' staring at a different course along the coast. These trips are definitely one of the highlights of the year.
President, Stan Smith started the President's Putter, supplying the prizes for this Medal competition. To this day, the President in office continues to donate the prizes.
In 2002 Dave Filmer started the Filmer Cup. After he died this was changed to the Memorial Cup which continues to this day.
In 2005 Bob Allcock, the Club Captain, organised a three day Men's away trip. These too have continued over the years.
Also in 2005 Antonio Dominguez donated the Honours Board and trophy for the Dominguez Trofeo.
In April 2010, the Club celebrated its 20th Anniversary of the opening of the Course. The mayor of Mijas, Jose Luis Moreno, gave a speech and the Secretary of the Golf Federation, Juan Vonrein, presented the Club with a commemorative plaque. The evening Gala Dinner was attended by 180 members.
David Alsop and Ann James donated the Board, trophies and prizes for the Charity Cup Competition.
In 2013 a programme started to replace all the greens. This was carried out with as little disruption as possible and work was completed in 2014. On June 15th 2014 we saw the opening of the waterfall and redesign of the 15th green. Many Members kindly donated to this project.
Another great milestone in the Club's history celebrating its 25th Anniversary in 2015 with a week of special competitions, food and entertainment for both Members and 'friends of Miraflores' who have supported the club through the years.
Miraflores Golf Club was awarded the Trip Advisor certificate of Excellence.
Sponsored Competitions
In 1999, Nordea sponsored two competitions during the year, donating an Honours Board and prizes for the Nordea Tournament.
In 2007, Steve Parker of Parksol, now Costalets, sponsored an annual competition supplying prizes and welcome refreshments on the 10th tee box.
These competitions continue to this day, as does an annual competition sponsored by Pepe Fernandez. All these competitions are greatly appreciated by the Members of the Club.
Charities
Each year, the Captains in office, make huge efforts to raise money for the charities of their choice.
Over the past 20 years, many thousands of Euros have been presented to Cudeca to help with the care of the terminally ill, particularly those suffering with Cancer, both along the coast and inland from Malaga. In 2015, Miraflores Golf Club were very proud to be presented with the Golf Pin Award for the monies raised over the 10 years preceding November 2014, a honour indeed.
The Downs Syndrome Society in Malaga have been presented with several cheques over the years after John and Jean Curtis started raising funds for this very worthy cause during their joint captaincy in 1999-2000.
In 2008, some of our Miraflores ladies braved the elements and were photographed for a 'Calendar Girls' style calendar. On another occasion many of the ladies supplied recipes, these went into a book of 'International Recipes'. All the proceeds of these were donated to the Downs Syndrome Society. In 2013, a cheque was presented tot he Ataxia-Telangiectasia Society bu the Captains (who also donated to Cudeca).
PADs, a society to help care for abandoned dogs, has also been supported during the years. In the past, competitions and an evening dinner were organised annually by Robin Spearman (Past President and Captain) to raise monies for this cause. A pre-season competition is still help to day.
